Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi!

It was a whirlwind experience. My mom and I were celebrating our birthdays within two weeks of each other, and I decided that it was high time we fulfilled her life-long dream: Visiting Australia. I found great tickets, planned our trip, and we were off! Landing in Sydney we spent the weekend exploring the city: taking in the historical sites, posing in front of the Opera House, and visiting a local church. One thing became very clear to us fairly quickly: Aussies know how to enjoy life! We found the Aussies to be quick to laugh, friendly, and vibrant. We spent the afternoon with a church group that we met, and they lovingly shared their lunch, introduced us to their group, and were curious about our lives in Hawaii. We basked in their warmth, and enjoyed their witty banter. They celebrated Sydney, and were proud of their aborignal and European heritage; but they were robustly proud of their sports teams! "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi!" is a common refrain heard at rugby matches, and it just felt like the perfect anthem for who they were. Going to the north-eastern coast to Cairns, we found a tropical beach town that reminded us of our own Hawaii, and the resort we stayed in gave us the amazing relaxation we were looking for. Once again we met locals who were curious, friendly, and passionate. As we passed by sports bars in Cairns, we could hear the familiar refrain drifting through the doors and couldn't help but smile. Yes, we snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef, held a koala, and petted kangaroos. These were things a visitor to Australia dreams of doing. But what was even more important were those amazing Aussies. Their passion for life, their joy, and that sparkle in their eye when making a hilarious joke; those are the most important memories we'll carry with us from visiting the Land Down Under. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi! Travel Tips for Cairns: *Watch out for the sea crocodiles: Yes, these exist! And they actually have a sign detailing what can happen to you if you aren't careful. *Stay outside of the city. There are plenty of lovely resorts in small towns close to Cairns. *Book a tour to the Great Barrier Reef after arriving at your hotel. I found that they had better deals and discounts than online.
